Developmental Learning and Environmental Change
نویسنده
چکیده
We study the interaction of mutations, developmental learning, and environmental change, as these processes effect changes in the genetic makeup of a population over time. Employing simulation based in genetic algorithms, we find that mutations have a consistent Diversifying Effect, which, in the presence of a changing environment, becomes an Adaptive Effect as average fitness increases, as well. The impact of developmental learning is dependent upon the conquerability of an environment. In conquerable environments, which have lower degrees of epistatic interaction allowing evolution without developmental learning to realize near optimal average fitness, developmental learning exhibits a Blurring Effect by increasing genetic diversity and lowering average fitness. In changing, conquerable environments, developmental learning has an Adaptive Effect as the increased genetic diversity allows evolution to better track change. In unconquerable environments, whether changing or unchanging, developmental learning exhibits a Baldwin Effect, improving average fitness while decreasing genetic diversity.

A Developmental Approach Accelerates Learning of Joint Attention
This paper argues how robot learning can be accelerated by a developmental approach that changes the capability of the learning robot (robot development) and/or the complexity of the environment (environmental development). “Robot development” means that the perceptual, cognitive, and behavioral capabilities of the learning robot change from immature to mature states in accordance with learning...
متن کاملEarly-Life Stress Triggers Juvenile Zebra Finches to Switch Social Learning Strategies
Stress during early life can cause disease and cognitive impairment in humans and non-humans alike. However, stress and other environmental factors can also program developmental pathways. We investigate whether differential exposure to developmental stress can drive divergent social learning strategies between siblings. In many species, juveniles acquire essential foraging skills by copying ot...

The majority of cognitive processes show measurable change over the lifespan. However, some argue that implicit learning from environmental structure is development invariant [e.g., Muelemans et al. متن کاملDevelopmental Idealism and the Proposal of a Theoretical Model for Family Change in Iran
This research examines dynamics and change in the Iranian family during the recent half- century especially subsequent to the Islamic revolution in 1979. Developmental positions and changes are discussed and consideration is given to the extent to which family dynamics and change have been influenced by structural changes or ideational forces. We will focus on ideational forces based on a new a...
